Zenit's Portuguese players

Fernando Meira (June 5, 1978)

Fernando MeiraThere are rarely better stories in professional sports than a local boy making it to the big time. This certainly applies to Fernando Meira, born and raised in Portugal’s founding city, Guimaraes. Full Fernando Meira profile

Danny (born August 7, 1983)

Danny“Did I ever think I’d play in Russia? No, never, but now I realise that coming here was the best thing I ever did,” admits Daniel Miguel Alves Gomes, on a curious career choice which has since paid rich dividends, with international recognition and a record-breaking transfer. Bruno Alves (November 29, 1981)

Bruno Alves was linked with a host of Europe's top clubs before making a big-money move from FC Porto to Zenit Saint Petersburg in August 2010. The powerful central defender had built a reputation as one of the best defenders in Portugal while with the Dragons, during which time Alves also became a first choice in the heart of the Portugal defence. The move to Russia came as somewhat of a surprise, given that the likes of AC Milan and Chelsea had regularly been tipped to make a move for the stopper, but Alves arrived at Zenit determined to prove his quality outside of Portugal.
