Arsenal's Portuguese players

Amaury Bischoff

Amaury BischoffFrench-born Portugal forward Amaury Bischoff was a surprise signing by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger in 2008, joining from Germans Werder Bremen. Having struggled with injuries during his time in Bremen - Bischoff made just 16 appearances in his final season in Germany - Wenger descibed the move as a "gamble on talent" and handed the 21-year-old his debut in November 2008 against Wigan Athletic.

A France under-18 international, Bischoff opted to play for Portugal in 2007, taking part in the Toulon Tournament and making the squad for the World Youth Cup held in Canada, although he subsequently missed the tournament due to injury.

Rui Fonte

Rui FonteSporting lost Rui Fonte to Arsenal's youth academy in the summer of 2006, when the young striker was just 16 years old. Since then, Fonte has made steady progress at the London club, culminating in him being handed his first-team debut by Arsene Wenger in the Carling Cup against Wigan in November 2008.
