Almeida scores as Bremen earn crucial win

Wolfsburg 2-4 Werder Bremen

Hugo Almeida came off the bench to score one goal and help provide another as Werder Bremen beat German champions Wolfsburg to move into third place in the Bundesliga.

The result saw Bremen move above Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund in the race for the third Champions League spot. However, Dortmund have one game in hand over their rivals - to be played tomorrow at home against Hoffenheim - and would reclaim 3rd with a victory.

Bremen had twice come from behind when Almeida was introduced with the score level at 2-2 in the 58th minute, and the Portuguese played a part in the goal that gave the visitors the lead. The former Porto man got his head to the ball to flick it into the path of Claudio Pizarro, who found Frings for the midfielder fire in his second of the match.

Almeida wrapped up the points himself with fifteen minutes remaining, controlling Mesut Ozil’s cross to the back post on his chest before beating Diego Benaglio with his left foot. It was the former Porto man’s 5th league goal of the season from 22 appearances, half of which have come as a substitute.

I'm really glad to see him score such a good goal. We need more from him. His role in this world cup will be bigger than most people anticipate.

I personally think Almeida should start for Portugal up front.
