Almeida, Machado & Moreira among goals; Eduardo drops clanger

Portuguese abroad round-up

Hugo Almeida scored for the fifth time in his last five Bundesliga matches against Nurnberg on Saturday, but the Portuguese striker’s early goal was not enough to prevent Werder Bremen from suffering a surprise defeat.

Almeida put Bremen ahead after five minutes at the Weserstadion when he met Marko Marin’s cross with his head at the back post. Bremen retained their 1-0 lead until the break, but Nurnberg stunned the hosts with goals either side of the break, as Ilkayi Gundogan struck in first-half stoppage time and Ekici put the mid-table side 2-1 up less than two minutes after the re-start.

Gundogan got his second on 73 minutes and, despite Almeida’s effort forcing a save from which Claudio Pizarro registered a consolation, the visitors held on for 3-2 to claim all three points. The result sees Bremen slip down to 11th place in the Bundesliga.

Eduardo embarrassed as champions edge Genoa

It was a night to forget for Genoa goalkeeper Eduardo on Friday, as the Portugal number one’s error allowed Inter to take all three points with a 1-0 victory at the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris.

The only goal came in first-half injury time, when Eduardo allowed what appeared a routine shot from Sulley Muntari to squirm past him and into the net. Genoa, who were without Miguel Veloso, remained in 10th place in Serie A following the defeat.

Machado spot-on for Toulouse

Paulo Machado scored his second league goal of the season in France as Toulouse were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Lens in Ligue 1 on Saturday.

The former Porto man, who set up all three goals from set-pieces last week as his team beat Sochaux, was given the responsibility from the penalty spot after just five minutes at the Stadium Municipal. The midfielder converted his kick, but his goal was later cancelled out by Lens’ Alaeddine Yahia.

Moreira scores again

Almani Moreira followed up his winning goal in last weekend’s Belgrade derby against Red Star by getting the opener as Partizan beat Jagodina 3-0 in the Super Liga.

After a goalless first half, former Boavista playmaker Moreira put Partizan in front six minutes into the second period with a calm finish. Ivica Iliev and Radoslav Petrovic added further goals in the closing stages for the champions, who lead the table from rivals Red Star.

Luzern off the top in Switzerland

Surprise early season league leaders FC Luzern slipped from the head of the Super League in Switzerland after a 4-1 defeat to Sion on Saturday.

Luzern, who are now three matches without a win in the league, had Portuguese duo Nelson Ferreira and Joao Paiva in the team that lost at Sion. Ferreira, with seven goals, and Paiva, with six, are the team’s top goalscorers so far this season.

Tonel on the mark in Croatia

Former Portugal and Sporting defender Tonel scored his second goal since arriving in Croatia, opening the scoring in Dinamo Zagreb’s 3-0 home win over Inter Zapresic. The 29-year-old scored in the 13th minute to set up a comfortable win for Dinamo, who lead the table by four points after 13 rounds of matches.

These mistakes are happening more frequently, I think the Selecao has to take a hard look at giving Fernandes a try before Euro2012.
