Video: Almeida snatches late winner as Bremen end poor run with victory over Hamburg

Werder Bremen 3-2 Hamburg

Hugo Almeida struck twice to help Werder Bremen beat Hamburg in the North Derby this afternoon and end a four-match winless run in all competitions.

Bremen were without a win since the end of August, and had suffered back-to-back defeats in their last two Bundesliga matches against Mainz (2-0) and Hannover (4-1) respectively. Before that, Thomas Schaaf’s men had been held at home by Tottenham in the Champions League and drawn 0-0 with German champions Bayern Munich.

The hosts got off to the perfect start this afternoon at the Weserstadion, however, with Bremen 2-0 up at half time thanks to goals from Marko Marin and Portugal striker Almeida. While there was some fortune about the opener, with Marin’s attempted cross deflecting into the net, Almeida’s strike was a textbook header as the former Porto man rose to meet a set-piece delivery from wide.

But things are rarely straightforward where Bremen are concerned, and their two-goal lead had been wiped out with less than twenty minutes of the second half played. First Ruud van Nistelrooy scrambled home from close range after good work from Jonathan Pitroipa (59’), before Pitroipa himself levelled matters with a fantastic strike form the edge of the area.

The match appeared to be heading for a draw until Almeida popped up again with less than five minutes remaining to grab the winner for Bremen. The Portuguese was on-hand at the far post to convert Wesley’s cross and secure a much-needed win for Bremen, who travel to European champions Inter in the Champions League on Wednesday.

This is more like it from Almeida. That's exactly what we need him to do for Portugal: drift into space in front of goal and latch onto the crosses that our talented wingers send into the box. He's pretty good with those glancing headers too. Much better finishing.
