Mature Almeida ready to stay with Bremen

Striker to remain in Germany

Portugal international Hugo Almeida says the experience gained from going to the World Cup with Portugal has matured him as a player, ahead of the new season with Werder Bremen.

The former Porto man has been linked with a move back to Portugal this summer, with Benfica suggested as a possible destination for the 26-year-old. However, it now appears likely that Almeida will stay in Germany, where he is already stating his ambitions for the 2010/11 campaign.

“I want to do a lot of things in the new season. I want to score goals and help the team be successful. I want to play an important role,” Almeida said.

“We finished third in the Bundesliga last season and we’re in the Champions League. What we did last season gives us motivation to compete for trophies this year. We know that we have a strong squad.

“Of course I would always trade goals for victories whether with my club or my country, but I want to find the net more often for Bremen and continue to be important for the team. I think I’ve matured enough in recent months to be confident enough to say I will have a good season.

“Competing in the World Cup is the dream of any player. It is the biggest competition in the world and you learn a lot there, even if you don’t win it. I believe I have matured as a player. I’ve gained a lot of experience from the World Cup that can help me.”

Half as good as Cardozo??? Did u even watch the world cup? Cardozo was non-existent, barely even seeing the field for Paraguay and Almeida was great when he was on the field against N Korea and Spain.

Granted Cardozo does score a mean tap in, open header and penalty shot (notice the sarcasm) but Almeida actually has the capability to score and create difficult goals.
good move

I think its a good move on his behalf. Moving to portugal would be a mistake as the german league is much stronger. Not to mention that Cardozo is 3 times better then this kid. For his size he seem lazy and uninspired if he thinks that now he can have a good season well ACTIONS speak louder then words, put the dam ball in the back of the net and BECOME the forward that portugal soooo desperatly needs. I would only wish this kid becomes 1/2 as good as cardozo then our national team would go further in tournaments

If he stays at Bremen its a big question mark if he will get consistent playing time. Last season he was the number three forward and really couldn't get in a groove. He will not progress by sitting on the bench. Come on Rui, dump Cardozo and splash some cash for a fellow portuguese. He already expressed his desire to come to the Luz now play your part.
