Gaziantepspor coach Couceiro revels in Fenerbahce scalp

“We took risks for the victory”

Having achieved the best results of his short career in Turkish football, Gaziantepspor’s Portuguese manager Jose Couceiro insists his team were worthy of their victory over league leaders Fenerbahce on Sunday.

Couceiro’s men ended Fenerbahce’s 100% record by coming from behind to claim a sensational 2-1 win at the Antep Kamil Ocak, bringing to an end eight-match winning streak by Christoph Daum’s side. Having watched his team score the winning goal deep into injury time, the former Porto boss insists the courage shown by his team made them worthy victors.

“It was an important victory for the team,” Couceiro told Record. “We only finalised the squad right at the end of August due to unexpected departures of three players and the injury of another, so we’ve gone through the motions. However, we have rebuilt the squad, with Jorginho and Linz coming in, and in the last two games we have shown our worth.

“It was a fair and deserved victory. We always risked more than our opponents and had some chances to score before. We took the risks and we were able to come out on top. The team is more confident after the last two victories.

“With the signings of Jorginho and Linz we have reached our foreign limit and can now only sign Turkish players. But we have a balanced squad and we have the ability to play on a level footing with the other teams in the top half of the table.”
