Midfielder having immediate impact at Konyaspor

NecaPortuguese midfielder Neca says he has adapted well to Turkish football, following his outstanding start to life with Turkcell Super Lig club Konyaspor.

The former Vitoria Guimaraes and Belenenses player, whose full name is Joao Alexandre Duarte Ferreira Fernandes, but is known simply as ‘Neca’, moved to Turkey from Maritimo on loan during the winter transfer window.

His impact on the club has been sensational, with the midfielder scoring four goals in six appearances, following a brace in his side’s 3-1 win at Sivasspor at the weekend.

“I have adapted well to the club, the league and the country,” he told Portuguese paper Record.

“In the stadiums, which are always full, the atmosphere is fantastic. The football is about strength and speed, as opposed to what I was accustomed to in Portugal, where the game is more thoughtful.”

With regard to his future when his loan period finishes, the 27-year-old is reluctant to look too far ahead, and is focused on helping Konyaspor, currently fifth, secure a top three place and European qualification.

“I’m enjoying this experience but, before anything else, I only want to finish my time here and put the club in European competition. Then we will see.”

Konyaspor entertain Trabzonspor at the Konya Ataturk Stadı on Saturday, and a win could see them move up into third place, with just two points separating the sides from 3rd to 6th place in the Turkish top flight.
