Machado scores in Toulouse victory

Toulouse 4-0 Grenoble

Paulo Machado scored his fifth league goal of the season as Toulouse beat Grenoble at the Stadium Municipal last night. The Portuguese also set up his team’s second goal, as Toulouse won for just the second time in twelve matches.

The hosts would have been expecting three points against Ligue 1’s bottom side, with Grenoble almost certain to be relegated having won just three league matches all season. Machado got Toulouse off to the perfect start on nine minutes, starting and finishing a move from close-range after Andre-Pierre Gignac’s shot was parried.

Machado was also involved in the second goal, combining brilliantly with Franck Tabanou for the forward to double Toulouse’s advantage on 65 minutes. The Portuguese set up his team-mate with a clever backheel on the edge of the penalty area, from which Tabanou dispatched a curling finish into the top corner. Machado himself had started the move, bursting infield from the right flank and exchanging passes with Tabanou before setting up the goal.

Tabanou added a third ten minutes later with a brilliant chipped finish, and Gignac rounded the scoring off five minutes from time with a well-taken shot from outside the box. The result moves Toulouse up to 12th place in the table, with 42 points from 32 matches.

Match highlights: Toulouse 4-0 Grenoble

Elsewhere, Joao Paulo Andrade played in defence as Le Mans held title contenders Montpellier to a 2-2 draw. The point looks unlikely to help in Le Mans’ bid for survival, with Andrade’s men thirteen points adrift of safety with one game in-hand. Marco Ramos was on the bench as Lens beat Boulogne 3-0 at home.
