Paulo Machado reveals secret behind table-topping Toulouse

“I want to show more than last season”

With two rounds played of the new French Ligue 1 season and plenty of early shocks, only two teams have a 100% record. One of those is sides is Toulouse, who sit top of the table, and Portuguese midfielder Paulo Machado admits he has been taken by surprise by his team’s start.

Toulouse are joined by newly-promoted Caen at the summit of the French top flight, with Machado scoring in an opening day 2-0 victory over Brest, before the team then won 2-1 away to Bordeaux last weekend, to take six points from their opening matches.

“It never crossed my mind that we would be in first place in the league, but it’s nice when it happens,” the former Porto midfielder said. “In the first games there can be surprises, and we knew that if things went well we could be well placed.

“As for me, I started well with a goal in the first round and I want to score more to help Toulouse. Now, we must continue on this path and try to achieve the best possible place in the table we can.

“What’s our secret? We did a good job in pre-season, but I think the secret comes from the work my team-mates did during the holidays. We had the right attitude. I was in Portugal and I wanted to get in good shape for the start of the campaign because I wanted to show more than last season, so I felt I needed to work even harder during the holidays.

“We have spoken amongst ourselves and we will not feel more pressure from being top of the league. In football, there’s all kind of pressure in every game. Besides, we have a good squad. There was little in the way of comings and goings during the summer, which means that the people in charge of the club have confidence in this group of players.”
