France: Machado spot on as Toulouse start with victory

Semedo, Ferreira on target in Cyprus, Switzerland

France’s Ligue 1 and Holland’s Eredivisie were the first of the major European leagues to get underway this weekend, with differing fortunes for the Portuguese representatives in each championship.

For ex Porto midfielder Paulo Machado’s Toulouse it was a perfect start to the new campaign, with three points and a clean sheet as Le Tef beat newly promoted Brest 2-0 at the Stadium Municipal on Saturday evening.

Daniel Omoya Braaten gave the hosts the lead on 36 minutes with a calm finish from inside the area, and it was the Norwegian midfielder who won the penalty from which the second was scored five minutes from time when he was brought down by Darlas. Machado stepped up and beat Elana with a precise right-footed spot kick to seal all three points for his team.

It was a less happy evening for the other Portuguese representative in the French top flight, however, as Marco Ramos started in defence for a Lens side that went down to a 2-1 home defeat to Nancy at the Stade Felix Bollaert.

VVV beaten

Moving over to Holland and a team worth keeping an eye on from a Portuguese perspective, and particularly those affiliated with FC Porto, is VVV-Venlo. Not only did VVV re-sign Diogo Viana on loan for a second season from the Dragons this summer, but the club also drafted in fellow Porto youngsters midfielder Jorge Chula, 20, and forward Josue, 19, on similar deals.

Only one of the trio was involved on the opening weekend of the new season, however, with Josue handed a start for the trip to NEC. Josue, who has been handed the no.10 shirt, was replaced with a little under twenty minutes to play as VVV-Venlo lost the match 1-0 at the McDOS Goffertstadion.

In Cyprus, Jose Semedo of Apollon followed up his midweek goal in the Europa League with another strike in the Super Cup against Omonia Nicosia. The match finished 1-1, with Semedo getting Apollon’s goal, but the Lisbon native would later miss a penalty in the decisive shootout to decide the match, with Omonia, for whom Bruno Aguiar also missed, emerging 3-2 winners.

Swiss team Luzern followed up their midweek elimination from the Europa League by twice throwing away the lead to lose 3-2 at home to Sion in the Super League. Portuguese midfielder Nelson Ferreira got the opener for the hosts, while striker Joao Paiva was introduced in the closing minutes but could not prevent Luzern from their second defeat in three days.
