Switzerland/Turkey: Joao Paiva goal fails to save Luzern

Defeats for Meira/Neca in Turkey

PaivaJoao Paiva scored for the second week running in Switzerland, but could not prevent his Luzern side from throwing away a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 home defeat to Young Boys on Sunday evening.

Both Paiva, who scored in his team’s 3-3 draw against Neuchatel Xamax last week, was joined in the Luzern starting line-up by Nelson Ferreira, and the hosts raced into a 2-0 lead, with Paiva getting the second on 18 minutes.

The game’s crucial moment arrived on 77 minutes with Luzern still 2-1 up, when Adan Vergara conceded a penalty and was then sent off. Raimondi equaliser from the spot for Young Boys, who went on to snatch a 90th-minute winner through Seydou Doumbia. By that time, Paiva had left the field, being substituted on 80 minutes.

Elsewhere in the Super League, Carlitos captained FC Basel in their home match with Grasshoppers, which finished goalless. The dropped point meant the champions missed the chance to close the gap on leaders FC Zurich, who had drawn the previous day, and remain five points off the top.


It was a bad weekend for the Portuguese representatives in the Turkish Super Lig, starting with Fernando Meira’s Galatasaray losing 1-0 at Antalyaspor on Saturday. The former Benfica man was in the Gala defence for a defeat which drift five points off surprise league leaders Sivasspor.

Meanwhile, Ankaraspor suffered a surprise 2-1 home defeat to Istanbul Buyuksehir. With Neca Fernandes playing 68 minutes, the result, Ankara’s second consecutive league defeat, means the capital club stay in 6th place in the Turkish top flight.
