Switzerland: Basel lose; Paiva scores for Luzern

Super League resumes

PaivaFC Basel returned from the seven-week winter break in Switzerland with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Young Boys, meaning they now trail leaders FC Zurich by five points at the top of the Super League.

Former Benfica winger Carlitos started the match for champions Basel, and went on to play the full ninety minutes. Having won the league and cup double last season, Carlitos’ side have now lost three of their last four matches in the Swiss top flight.

Meanwhile, Joao Paiva followed up his brace in the final weekend before the winter break by getting the opener in FC Luzern’s 3-3 draw at Neuchatel Xamax. Both Paiva and Nelson Ferreira started for bottom-placed Luzern, with Paiva opening the scoring on eight minutes, ahead of being replaced on 73 minutes.

Luzern remain rooted to the bottom of the table, but with two wins and a draw from their last three matches in all competitions, FCL have given themselves renewed hope that they can make up the three-point gap between themselves and the playoff position, or the five points which separate them from guaranteed safety.
