Portuguese duo keep Luzern top in Switzerland

St. Gallen 1-2 FC Luzern

First-half goals from Portuguese pair Nelson Ferreira and Joao Paiva proved enough for FC Luzern to gain a victory over St. Gallen this afternoon, keeping the surprise leaders top of the Super League.

Luzern, who narrowly avoided relegation two seasons ago before finishing fourth last year, maintain their two-point advantage over Basel at the top of the table. The team from central Switzerland also have a game in-hand, having won six, drawn two and lost just one of their opening nine matches.

Portugal born winger Nelson Ferreira opened the scoring on 24 minutes, and former Sporting and Maritimo reserve Joao Paiva (pictured) made it two fifteen minutes before half time. St. Gallen did pull a goal back early in the second period through Tim Bakens, but Luzern held on to secure all three points and continue an unlikely title challenge.
