Romania: Semedo set to sign for champions Unirea Urziceni

Four-year deal for striker

Portuguese forward Antonio Semedo is reportedly set to join Romanian champions Unirea Urziceni on a free transfer, following his release from Steaua Bucharest last month.

Semedo, 30, left the capital after just one season with Steaua, whom he joined from CFR Cluj in the summer of 2008. The former Estrela da Amadora man struggled to make an impact as the team endured a torrid campaign, finishing 5th despite pre-season hopes of winning the championship.

However, Semedo’s reputation in Romania remains high after his excellent spell with Cluj, where he helped the modest Transylvania club to their first-ever league title in 2008. As a result, last season’s surprise champions Unirea, managed by former Romania and Chelsea defender Dan Petrescu, have made their move for the player, offering Semedo a four-year deal.

Last season’s title triumph means the club from the south-east of the country gain automatic entry to the group phase of the 2009/10 Champions League. Semedo took part in Europe’s premier club competition last year with Steaua, and the move to Unirea will see the pacey forward again given the opportunity to showcase his talent on the continental stage.
