Steaua Bucharest ponder move for Antonio Conceicao

Portuguese coach one of favourites for top job in Romania

Antonio ConceicaoPortuguese coach Antonio Conceicao is considered one of two favourites to become the next manager of Steaua Bucharest, Romania’s most successful club.

Romanian daily Pro Sport today ran an in-depth article on the possibility, stating that the manager’s job at the 1986 European Champions will be given to either 49-year-old Conceicao or Romanian Victor Piturca.

Currently managing Brasov in Romania, the coach known in Portugal simply as “Toni” has achieved impressive results since taking his new post in January, including a 3-0 win at Steaua, on top of a successful stint at another Romanian club CFR Cluj in 2009.

Conceicao’s contract at Brasov runs until the end of the season and he recently declared that he would like either to return to Portugal at a club that was fighting for European qualification, or remain in Romania but at a club that was in the hunt for silverware.

“We deserve (myself and my assistants), at this stage of our careers, to lead an ambitious team with enough quality to win trophies, which may even be the case at Brasov. This club has invested very heavily over two years now.”

Since joining Brasov in January Conceicao has overseen an upturn in the club’s fortunes and obtained a series of victories against Romania’s top teams, including league leaders Otelul and Steaua. Compatriots Nuno Viveiros and Filipe Teixeira also joined Brasov in January.

However, if Steaua come knocking it would be difficult for Conceicao to turn down one Eastern Europe’s biggest clubs.
