Geraldo Alves swaps AEK for Steaua Bucharest

Defender moves to Romania

Portuguese defender Geraldo Alves has signed a two-year contract with Steaua Bucharest, the Romanian side confirmed on Monday afternoon.

Geraldo, who is the older brother of Porto stopper Bruno Alves, had played the last three years in Greece with Athens club AEK. After starting his career in Greek football as first choice, Alves lost his place in the AEK side during the 2008/09 campaign and spent much of the last 18 months as a back-up player at the Olympic Stadium.

Before moving to AEK, Alves enjoyed four seasons with Pacos de Ferreira, having previously represented Beira-Mar and Gil Vicente after leaving Benfica, where he mainly represented the B team, in 2001.

Former European champions Steaua finished in 4th place in the Romanian top flight last season, and last won the national championship in 2005/06. In recent years, the club has proved an unhappy home for Portuguese players Antonio Semedo, Tininho and Tiago Gomes, all of whom had short-lived spells in the capital.
