Machado free to join Toulouse after St Etienne reach agreement with Porto

Clubs resolve issues

paulo machadoThe confusing saga surrounding the future of Paulo Machado appears to have been resolved, after Saint Etienne announced they have reached an agreement with Porto which allows the Portuguese to move to Toulouse.

Machado, who spent last season on-loan with St Etienne in France, was thought to be close to a move to Ligue 1 rivals Toulouse last month, only for his employers from last season to claim they retained a purchasing option when making the original 12-month deal with Porto.

However, after negotiations between the parties, St Etienne released a statement confirming that the 23-year-old has been allowed to sever his ties at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, with ASSE believed to have been compensated for the breaking of the original agreement.

A club statement clarified the situation: “Saint Etienne, FC Porto and the player Paulo Machado have reached an agreement making it possible to put an end to the legal disputes.

“On June 27 2008, at the time of the loan agreement, Saint-Etienne gained an option to buy which became automatic when the player took part in 15 professional matches with Saint Etienne. This option was accepted by Paulo Machado.

“At this point, Saint Etienne and Paulo Machado agreed on the essential components of his future contract with Saint Etienne. The club envisaged further discussing certain elements of the contract with the player at the end of the season, because during the course of the season the common objective of survival took precedence over all individual player situations.

“However, after the player expressed his unambiguous desire to leave Saint Etienne, FC Porto and Saint Etienne found an agreement which preserves the legitimate economic rights of Saint Etienne.”

Machado is believed to have already settled personal terms with Toulouse, while Porto will receive around 3.5m Euros for the Portugal under-21 international.
