Goncalves heading to Celtic?

Defender to move on a free

Former Portugal under-21 international Jose Goncalves is close to agreeing a summer switch to Celtic from fellow SPL club Hearts, according to reports in Scotland.

Goncalves’ contract at the Tynecastle Stadium is up at the end of the season, with the 24-year-old turning down several attempts from the club to renew his deal. The Lisbon-born stopper has been with Hearts since 2006, although he spent last season on-loan in Germany with Nurnberg.

Back in the Hearts team having recently been frozen out after refusing contract talks, Goncalves is believed to negotiating a move to Celtic Park. Reports in Glasgow suggest the talks are at an advanced stage, although the defender, who can play in either the centre or the left of the backline, is thought to be fielding interest from several clubs.

Goncalves admitted last November that, after four years in Edinburgh, he would likely seek a new challenge at the end of the season. Despite his young age, the defender has already played in several countries, with his spells in Scotland and Germany preceded by stints in Italy, Lithuania and initially Switzerland, where he gained his footballing education.
