Tiago Gomes unsure of Steaua stay

Midfielder pleased with personal performance in Romania

tiago gomesTiago Gomes says he is yet to decide whether he will stay with Romanian side Steaua Bucharest, or look to seek a new challenge in another country.

The 23-year-old joined Steaua on a one-year loan deal from Estrela da Amadora last summer, and the clubs are thought to be in negotiations to make the midfielder’s stay in Bucharest permanent.

After initially struggling to adapt to life in Romania, Gomes finished the season strongly, although the team struggled to match expectations set at the beginning of the campaign and finished in a disappointing 5th place in the first division.

“I won’t discard any possibility,” he told Maisfutebol. “I do not know if it would be better for me to continue here or try another league.

“The collective performance this season was not the best. Steaua is used to fighting for the title or to get into the Champions League places and this season we did not manage to do this. On a personal level, it went well. At the start I didn’t play much, but towards the end I was used more.”

That Gomes reflects positively on his first year abroad is somewhat remarkable, given that his early season struggles led to controversial president Gigi Becali making a public declaration that he would pay to be relieved of the Portuguese’s services. “It was a negative moment, happily I managed to overcome everything,” admits Tiago.

There have been links with Spanish clubs, although the player insists he is aware of nothing concrete, but concedes that La Liga is “one of the best leagues in the world”. Gomes is also keen not to rule out a return to Portugal, stating that he “doesn’t close the door” on a move back to his homeland.
