Romanian midweek wrap: Dinamo stay top

romaniaDinamo Bucharest remain leaders in Romania heading into the final eight matches of the season, following a 5-0 hammering of Gloria Bistrita on Tuesday evening. Winter signing Bruno Simao was selected in defence by Dinamo, as a hat-trick from former Sporting striker Marius Niculae maintained the capital club’s two-point advantage at the top. Diogo Ramos played in defence for Gloria.

Surprise package Unirea Urziceni are in second, after defender Bruno Fernandes helped them to a 1-0 victory over Vaslui. There were Portuguese involved on either side as champions CFR Cluj were held 1-1 by Steaua Bucharest in the big midweek game in Romania tonight. Portuguese manager Toni took his champions to the capital with Dani in his starting line-up, but saw his team take a 9th-minute lead through Argentine Juan Culio.

Steaua started the match with Tiago Gomes in midfield, and the home side had drawn level through Dayro Moreno by the time Antonio Semedo was introduced just after the hour. The result leaves Cluj five points off the top, while 6th place Steaua are one point away from the top five finish required for European qualification.

Rapid Bucharest slipped down to 7th place following a 1-0 defeat at Arges Pitesti. Joao Paulo Andrade played in defence for Rapid, while Joao Paulo was introduced at half time. Otopeni, with Nuno Diogo and Vitinha in defence, went down 3-0 at Gaz Metan and are now eleven points adrift of safety in 17th place. Rui Duarte and Paulo Adriano played for FC Brasov, who were held 1-1 at home by Universitatea Craiova.

Striker Chico Fernandes was substituted late on in Farul Constanta’s 2-0 defeat at Otelul Galati, while Diogo was in the Gloria Buzau side beaten 1-0 by Pandurii and Nuno Viveiros was subbed in the second half as Poli Iasi lost 3-0 to FC Timisoara.
