Domestic Cup draws

portuguese-cup-close-up.jpgAfter the excitement of the Seleção, attention turned again to domestic football in the second half of the week, specifically to the Cup competitions. In the Portuguese Cup 5th round draw favourites FC Porto and Benfica were both handed home ties, against Atlético and Gil Vicente respectively.
The match-up between Porto and Atlético brings back memories of one of the greatest giant-killing feats in recent years. Atlético, one of Portugal’s most historic clubs, but playing in the third tier at the time, travelled to the Estádio do Dragão and knocked out the mighty Dragons thanks to a David da Costa goal in the 59th minute.
“We want to repeat history. Seven years ago the match was on 7 January; this time it will be on the 4 or 5 and we’ll look to cause another surprise,” said Atlético’s club spokesman Francicso Nobre.
Benfica’s reward for knocking out Sporting in a thrilling 4-3 victory in the 4th round is another home game. Again, it should be no easy ride for Benfica, as they welcome high-flying Gil Vicente to the Estádio da Luz.
