Vieirinha inspires PAOK to top spot in Greece

Xanthi 0-3 PAOK

Fernando Santos’ PAOK have taken temporary leadership of the Greek Super League, after Vieirinha scored two and set up another in a 3-0 victory at Xanthi on Saturday.

The win was PAOK’s ninth from their last ten league matches, with the other being a draw, as Santos’ men continue on what has been an impressive challenge for their first championship in twenty-five years.

Vieirinha was the key figure in yesterday’s three points. The former Porto man opened the scoring by heading home Lino’s free-kick on seven minutes, before crossing for Vladimir Ivic to double PAOK’s advantage six minutes later and putting the seal on the victory with his second of the match midway through the second half.

Vieirinha was replaced by Santos’ January recruit from Pacos de Ferreira, Cristiano, with ten minutes left to play, while Portuguese international striker Edinho was introduced in the closing minutes as the visitors cruised to their 16th win from 24 league games.

PAOK now lead Panathinaikos and Olympiakos at the top of the Super League by one and three points respectively, although both sides can overtake Santos’ men depending on their results in Sunday afternoon’s fixtures.
