Vieirinha wins PAOK supporters’ award

Midfielder recognised by fans

Supporters of Greek club PAOK FC have voted Portuguese midfielder Vieirinha as the team’s Most Valuable Player for the 2009/10 season.

The former Porto man was issued the award before his team’s 1-0 victory over AEK in the Greek end of season play-offs on Sunday evening, in recognition of a superb campaign in which Vieirinha has scored seven times from 32 matches in the Super League.

Vieirinha, 24, spent last season on loan at PAOK, playing under the guidance of Portuguese boss Fernando Santos. Despite a debut year disrupted by injuries, Santos saw enough from his compatriot to push through a permanent deal for the midfielder last summer, and Vieirinha is now tied to PAOK until 2013.

PAOK will play in the Champions League third qualifying round, where they could meet Sporting Braga, after winning the play-offs in the Greek Super League. Santos’ men had finished third in the regular season, eight points adrift of champions Panathinaikos.
