Juventus to swoop for Portugal full-back Nelson?

Osasuna defender overjoyed to be pre-selected by Paulo Bento

Nelson fights off the attentions of Lionel MessiItalian giants Juventus are preparing a bid for Osasuna’s Portuguese full-back Nelson, according to Italian site Calciomercato. The news has coincided with the former Benfica defender’s call-up into Paulo Bento’s pre-selection squad for Portugal’s upcoming friendlies against Chile and Finland.

Nelson is enjoying a fine season for Osasuna and seems to have rediscovered the sort of form that earned him call-ups into the Seleccao squad in 2008 and 2009. His appearance in the 2-0 friendly win over South Africa on 31 March 2009 remains his only cap to date.

“What I can confirm is that nobody has spoken directly to me, but I can’t deny that somebody may have spoken to my agent,” Nelson told reporters yesterday.

“I know I’ve got a market in Italy, it’s not the first time I’ve been linked to a big Italian club, so let’s see what happens in the future. Whatever happens, I’m not going to take my eye of the essential task, which is helping Osasuna stay in the Spanish first division. And we can’t forget that I am owned by Betis.”

Fine season

Despite the fact his club side are struggling in La Liga, Nelson’s fine individual displays have not gone unnoticed by Portugal coach Paulo Bento. The full-back, who can play on the right or the left, has made Bento’s pre-selection list, from which the final squad for Portugal’s games at the end of the month will be chosen.

“You can’t imagine how happy this news made me. This is not yet confirmation that I’m going to return to the Seleccao, but it means I’m closer to achieving my dream of playing for Portugal again.

“When I see some of my colleagues retiring from international football, I always think that I’d like the opposite to happen to me. Paulo Bento has given me one of the happiest moments in my career in recent years through this pre-selection. Now the only thing missing is the final joy of being selected for the actual squad.”

"Portugal's defence is gonna be great for the next 7 years at least."

That's great. Now if only we could find a quality striker...

Good To Have Another Full Back For Portugal

Now we have Pereira, Bosingwa, Coentrao, Silvio (he will be great in another year), and Nelson. Our list of centre backs is also oddly stacked with Alves, Rolando, Pepe, Carrico, and Carvalho. Portugal's defence is gonna be great for the next 7 years at least.
