Nelson repeats Seleccao ambitions after Osasuna shock Real Madrid

Osasuna 1-0 Real Madrid

While Sunday night’s shock defeat at the hands of relegation battlers Osasuna marked a disastrous end to the weekend for Real Madrid’s Portuguese contingent, the upset was yet another occasion for ex-Benfica full-back Nelson to demonstrate his re-emergence as a potential contender for a place in Paulo Bento’s next Seleccao squad.

Playing at left-back, Nelson gave another assured display to add to his recent impressive form for Osasuna, having made the move to Pamplona in August from Real Betis. Following the victory over a Real side containing Ricardo Carvalho and Cristiano Ronaldo, Nelson spoke about the important of the result in a collective sense, and the possible benefits of another solid personal performance.

“It was not important to win because it was Real Madrid, because it was against Jose Mourinho or against Ronaldo. It was important because it stops the team from dropping into the relegation zone,” Nelson said. “The last few games have been difficult for us and have taken our confidence away, but a win over Real Madrid lifts us up again.

“We are an aggressive team, but we play good football, which is the only way you can beat Real Madrid. I have sympathy for Jose Mourinho, Ronaldo and the other Portuguese, because it is now going to be very difficult for them to make up seven points on Barcelona. The problem is not the seven points, but Barcelona, who are so good.

“I think everyone could see in this game that I am versatile, that I can play on the right or the left. I know that Portuguese football followers were very attentive to this game because of Real Madrid, so I hope it worked as an opportunity to show again that I do still exist and keep my chances alive.

“I think I did a good job. I managed to succeed in preventing Di Maria from having much of an influence on the game and in an attacking sense, I supported the play as much as I could. This is the way I am and I have always been this type of player. I would like to come back to the Seleccao and I hope I do because I believe I merit it. I hope to get an opportunity.”
