Conceicao unveiled at Olhanense

Calls for "a team in my own image"

After a run of three straight defeats, and a protracted bout of negotiations, Olhanense have replaced coach Dauto Faquira with former FC Porto, Parma, Lazio and Internazionale wide man Sergio Conceicao, who makes his Liga coaching bow after a short apprenticeship at Standard Liege.

After an impressive start to 2010/11, Olhanense faded badly under Faquira and that inconsistent form carried over into the current campaign. Consecutive home losses to Academica and Braga, followed by a lifeless display at Oliveirense in the Taca de Portugal quarter-finals before Christmas spelled the end for the former Setubal and Estrela da Amadora tactician, and opened a door for Conceicao.

Survival the goal

With the primeira volta almost completed, Olhanense lie in 10th, but such is the tightness of the table, that sees them just two points above the relegation zone. Conceicao declared today that securing top flight football for 2012/13 "as quickly as possible" was his initial goal, but stressed that "we can do good things." Olhanense supporters will be heartened by his experience at Standard, where as assistant to Dominique D'Onofrio Conceicao lifted the Belgian Cup, and achieved a 2nd-place finish.

Despite the fact that this is Conceicao's first head coaching position, Olhanense President Isidoro Sousa appeared happy with the appointment of "a man who needs no introduction." Conceicao represents the latest in a growing line of youthful coaches handed an opportunity by Olhanense (including one-time teammate Jorge Costa), and with trips to Maritimo and Sporting to come over the next month, the former Portugal international will have to hit the ground running.

Fernandes returns to Olhao

As well as Conceicao, Olhanense unveiled a new signing this afternoon, though he will be a familiar figure at the Jose Arcanjo. Right back Vasco Fernandes, born in Olhao and a product of the club's youth system, has terminated his contract with Beira-Mar and returned to the Algarve outfit on an eighteen-month deal.

He's a player I've always admired, and I hope he can be good for Olhanense! I really wish him the best with this team! I'm already looking at them and wanting them to do well since Wilson Eduardo is there. I hope Conceicao can get them back on track!
