Van der Gaag hoping for Makukula return

Maritimo manager thinks striker will increase team's quality

Makukula20070824.jpgMariitmo are not quite done in the transfer market. The club recently acquired centre-backs Julio Cesar and Valentin Roberge, but the Mitchell Van der Gaag would love to see Ariza Makukula at the Barreiros.

Makukula had already spent some time with the verde-rubros, on loan from Sevilla back in 2007, scoring 7 goals in 13 appearances, before making a switch to Benfica during the 2008 winter transfer window.

The Congolese-born marksman did not have the most pleasant of experiences with the Lisbon club and went onto a further unsuccessful loan spell with Bolton Wanderers.

The 29-year-old resurrected his career in Turkey last season, while on loan again, with Kayserispor, notching 21 goals for the Turkish side. Kayserispor were unable to met Benfica's financial demands to buy the striker, and Makukula is still deemed excess to requirements at the Estdaio da Luz. Maritimo are hoping that they can strike a deal for the former Nantes man, but know that desire alone will not finalise an accord.

"Makukula's arrival would be ideal," said Van der Gaag bluntly. "He has a lot of quality and already passed through here. It's not enough to just want him, the financial aspect also is very important."

"He would bring more value (to the team), he is very popular and this is also important to show our supporters that Maritimo want to continue to grow and improve. We will see what happens."

Central-defending duo

As for Maritimo's new stoppers, Van der Gagg was equally happy with both acquisitions, but did disclose that one is for immediate use, while the other will be integrated with time.

"Julio Cesar is a player with quality and experience as he has played with big clubs. Now he is here and I'm happy, but he has to show (what he can do) on the pitch and I believe that he will be another valuable player."

"Valentin Roberge is different as he is one more for the future. Despite his young age, he has already played in Greece and we believe that he can contribute in the future as he does have quality. He needs time as he hasn't played in a while."

It would be great for Makukula to get an opportunity in teh league.
he obviously won't crack the rotation at Benfica. It might come back to bite us, or maybe he could be injured when they play Benfica, but it would be nice to see him get a chance.
