Turkey: Makukula inspires Manisaspor win; Quaresma shines for Besiktas

Super Lig round-up

Manisaspor ended a three-match losing streak in the Turkish Super Lig by earning a surprise victory over Galatasaray at the Ali Sami Yen, with Ariza Makukula setting up the win with the opening goal.

Manisaspor are struggling in the bottom half of the table and suffered a disappointing cup exit in midweek, having lost their previous two league matches. Galatasaray have also had their problems this season, but as one of the country’s traditional heavyweights, would have hoped to get back on track when they entertained Manisaspor in Istanbul.

However, Makukula struck just after the half hour mark, turning well onto his right foot before tucking a cool finish past Ufuk Ceylan. The goal separated the teams for much of the match, until Josh Simpson’s penalty fifteen minutes from time handed Manisaspor a welcome three points.

Elsewhere, Ricardo Quaresma provided a memorable assist as Besiktas won 2-0 at Genclerbirligi. The visitors went ahead just before half time through Guti’s penalty, and Quaresma created the clinching goal in stoppage time at the end of the 90 minutes for German Roberto Hilbert.

Vitor Pele was given just a couple of minutes of playing time at the end of his Eskisehirspor side’s goalless draw at home against Antalyaspor. Former Portugal under-21 international Pele has featured in ten of his team’s 12 league games so far this season, starting eight time and making two substitute appearances.

Bento NEEDS to call up Quaremsa and Makakula!, these guys are doing quite well in their leagues, why not??..give them a shot?...I know we are loaded at the wingers spot, but the striker position we are weak at, give Makakula a shot. no?

That goal was flawless. Any striker, in any league, would be proud of that goal. It just cements Ariza's ability as a striker.
