Makukula pleased at opening Manisaspor account

Striker grateful to club

It has taken Portugal international Ariza Makukula little time to rediscover his goalscoring form in Turkish football. The former Benfica forward is back scoring goals in the Super Lig, this time with new club Manisaspor.

Makukula spent last season on loan at Kayserispor from Benfica, and ended the campaign as the Turkish league’s top goalscorer with an impressive 21 goals. However, that form was not enough to convince Eagles coach Jorge Jesus, and the 29-year-old was allowed to join Manisaspor in a €2m deal at the end of August.

It already looks a shrewd piece of business for the after the Congo-born striker bagged a brace in a 3-1 victory at Trabzonspor on Friday. The goals were particularly significant to Makukula, who saw a summer move to Trabzonspor fall through at the last moment, with the club apparently deciding against for footballing reasons.

“Firstly, I am very happy about the match and for scoring two goals,” he said. “But I want to say that before the game with Trabzonspor, there were rumours that upset me, that I am not a good team player. I believe I give my answers on the field.

“I would like to thank the president and the coach. I was top goalscorer last year, so I became well known in Turkey. But when it came to the final days of the transfer window, I wasn’t sure where I was going to end up. Manisaspor came in for me at the end and now I’m here. The team gave everything for this victory. We will do our best to keep improving.”
