Video: Nunes nets winner for high-flying Mallorca; Simao magic for Atletico

Spain round-up

Former Braga defender Jose Nunes was a match winner for Mallorca this weekend, scoring the winner as the Islanders beat Villarreal to move into a Champions League position.

Nunes arrived at the back post to head home a deep free-kick ten minutes from time, netting his third league goal of the campaign. Fellow Portuguese Bruno China was introduced in the closing minutes for Mallorca, who are exceeding all expectations with their form this season.

Mallorca move into 4th place because Sevilla were beaten at relegation-battlers Real Zaragoza on Sunday evening. Eliseu - a winter signing for Zaragoza - played 69 minutes before being replaced, while Sevilla ended the match with nine men and the hosts with ten after a flurry of late red cards.

Simao Sabrosa was again in the thick of the action as Atletico Madrid were held to a 1-1 draw at Racing Santander. The Portugal winger created the opener for Diego Forlan with an outstanding defence-splitting pass, but with Simao and Tiago on the pitch for the full match, Atletico conceded to Gonzalo Colsa before the break and were unable to find another breakthrough.

Elsewhere, Duda played the full match for Malaga in their goalless draw with Deportivo La Coruna, who left Ze Castro on the bench. Miguel was also an unused substitute for Valencia, who also did not include Manuel Fernandes in a 2-0 win over Valladolid. Vitor Pele was introduced at half time for the visitors.

Honestly Lex you go on every article bashing Benfica or any player that has very been associated with the team. Simao is a great player and way better then Nani, Varela, and proved to be better then Ronaldo for the WC qualifiers. I bet you would say Rui Costa is garbage if he was playing. You are a disgrace to Portuguese fans

Very impressive, 10 matches home, 10 wins. The same like Real Madrid.
Nunes looks a consistent defender, I can bet he's on better form now than Zé Castro from Deportivo.
atletico

hows atletico doing by the way? 10th place is pretty disgraceful for a team with SIMAO.... haha.. simao is great im not saying hes not. But hes a problem because he cant run for 90min... varela can... plus varela is consistent and is beating HULK FOR HIS JOB... We need players that can beat brazil and well varela is taking hulks job... PUT HIM ON

simao is garbage ! in terms of wingers he is indeed the worst winger we have. Nani, Ronaldo, and Varela are all better than him. Simao cannot and i repeat cannot do these plays on the national team. If you watch the games you would know this guy cant last more than 60 mins on the pitch.
Are you saying Simao is better than varela cuz of more experience? Thats why we always lose because we dont give good players a shot. Varela is faster, and works harder than simao. Simao is a better technical player but he cant last 90min. What did simao do in the national team for the WC 06 and euro 08... Well the answer is.... not much!
Simao

I'm sick of listening to some of you who keep underestimating simao..please stop saying 'simao shouldn't be in portugal starting 11!' that was unacceptable statement, never compare him with varela..simao has more experiences than him in NT even varela has not played 4 portugal NT yet at all..
Nunes is in a good form, but he's too old to call up
