La Liga wrap: Nunes scores in Mallorca win; Ronaldo’s Real go top

Spanish action round-up

Jose Nunes got his first goal of the season to help Mallorca up to fourth place in the Spanish league, on a weekend that saw Cristiano Ronaldo’s record goalscoring run come to an end.

Former Braga defender Nunes took just three minutes to put the Islanders ahead, firing home from inside the penalty area after the visitors had failed to defend a Mallorca corner. Aduriz and Borja Varelo added further goals in the second half consigned Valladolid, who were without Vitor Pele, to their second successive league defeat.

Cristiano Ronaldo failed to get on the score sheet, but was again on the winning side as Real Madrid brushed Tenerife aside 3-0 at the Bernabeu. Pepe made his La Liga return as two goals from Karim Benzema and a superb late Kaka strike moved Madrid top of the league.

Champions Barcelona slip down to second, despite maintaining their 100% record with a 2-0 win at Malaga, who started with Duda but replaced the Portuguese with a little under fifteen minutes left to play. Deportivo are up to 5th place, as Ze Castro was an unused substitute in their 1-0 win over Villarreal.

There was a Portuguese in either squad as Saturday evening’s big match saw Valencia and Atletico Madrid share the points in a 2-2 draw at the Mestalla. Simao started the match for Atletico who, having taken an early lead through Kun Aguero, were trailing to 2-1 until substitute Maxi Rodriguez’s late strike. The Argentine had replaced Simao early in the second period, while Miguel saw all the action from the home bench.
