Eliseu: I almost joined Benfica

Malaga forward had one foot in the Luz

Eliseu-official.jpgThings could have played out very differently for Malaga forward Eliseu, who confessed that he was on the verge of signing for Lisbon giants Benfica in the close season.

According to the Portuguese international, the two parties had been negotiating this past summer as the Aguias were keen on bringing the 27-year-old into the fold.

Eliseu would have reunited with his former coach Jorge Jesus as the two worked together at Belenenses. The idea was to do the same for this season, but a failure to come to terms ruptured any potential deal as the ex-Lazio man returned to the La Rosaleda.

"I spoke many times with Jorge Jesus and he gave me confidence. He told me that he wanted me at Benfica and I knew what his intentions for me  were," admitted Eliseu to Record. "I did not have any problem going to Benfica and I am certain that I would have made good there - absolutely!"

"After I left Lazio, where things did not go as I expected, I had various offers to continue my career. Malaga also showed interest in having me come back. Since Decemeber of last season they wanted me to leave Lazio."

"But I started to negotiate with Benfica this summer and it was only due to minor details that it fell through. I admit that I was very disappointed that the deal did not materialise, but now I'm happy here at Malaga."

"Benfica are a club where I always dreamed of playing and I still hold the ambition to wear the Aguias jersey. Clearly, I also had a dream to represent the national team and I've already realised that, but this one, no."

"It's been a wish of mine since I was young - to don the Benfica symbol and play in that stadium. It is the only objective that I have."

Eliseu, you should've known that the Portuguese League is reserved for foreigners, rather than our own countryman.

Would of been a much smarter move to make a return to Portugal especially a chance to play in the Champions League. Eliseu would of been a good replacement for Ramires on the right side instead of the dilemma we had at the beginning of the season. Either way I wish him good luck at Malaga and I wouldn't mind seeing him playing for the Aguias in the future.
