Eliseu sees red again as Malaga held

La Liga wrap

Portuguese international Eliseu was sent off for the second weekend running in Malaga’s 1-1 draw at Almeria on Sunday afternoon. The former Belenenses man received his marching orders at almost the exact same stage of the game as last week against Villarreal.

Eliseu received clearance to play at Almeria after his dismissal against Villarreal for a scuffle with Carlos Marchena was overturned on appeal. Malaga coach Jesualdo Ferreira selected the pacey wideman in his line-up for the contest with their Andalucian rivals, while Edinho was not included in the match squad as he struggles with an ankle injury.

However, with the match still goalless, the Seleccao winger was again sent off in the 40th minute at the Estadio de los Juegos. This time the 27-year-old was handed a straight red for a lunge on Juan Ortiz, meaning the visitors would again have to play more than half the match with ten men.

Jesualdo’s actually managed to take the lead less than five minutes after the re-start through Quincy Owusu-Abeyie, but Almeria levelled through Kalu Uche twenty minutes from time as the sides shared the points.

On Saturday evening, Valencia recovered from their midweek defeat to Manchester United by taking all three points against Athletic Bilbao at the Mestalla. Manuel Fernandes and Ricardo Costa were drafted into the starting line-up by Los Ches boss Unai Emery, as Valencia ran out 2-1 winners.

Both Tiago Mendes and Simao Sabrosa played from the start for Atletico Madrid in their trip to Sevilla, but the Portuguese duo could not prevent Los Rojiblancos from going down to a 3-1 defeat.

Elsewhere, Tiago Gomes was in the Hercules side that lost 3-0 at Getafe, while former Benfica right-back Nelson played the final few minutes after coming off the bench in Osasuna’s 1-1 home draw with Levante in Pamplona.
