Meireles winner sees Liverpool past Chelsea

Chelsea 0-1 Liverpool

Raul Meireles continued his run of goalscoring form with a crucial winner as Liverpool beat Premier League champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The former Porto midfielder scored his fourth goal in his last five matches to give Kenny Dalglish’s side a 4th consecutive win. Meireles struck in the 69th minute, getting on the end of a Steven Gerrard centre after Chelsea duo Petr Cech and Branislav Ivanovic failed to intercept the cross.

The win was particularly sweet for the travelling Reds fans, who roundly booed former striker Fernando Torres until the Spaniard was substituted midway through the second half on his debut for Chelsea. Meanwhile, David Luiz was introduced in the 72nd minute, in place of Jose Bosingwa, to make his first appearance for the Blues following a big-money move from Benfica.

The result sees Liverpool into the top six in the Premier League, six points adrift of a Champions League place. For Chelsea, the dropped points represent a missed chance to close the gap on Manchester United, and Carlo Ancelotti’s men remain ten points off the leaders with thirteen matches to play.

Meireles surprised me in the World Cup and he continues to at Liverpool. He's playing so well now that Gerard has had to adjust to him. Ultimately they trade off throughout the game, but that would have been unheard of last year. I may dislike liverpool, but I wish him continued success.

Let me also add that Luis looked very good when he cam into the game. He looked assertive and wasn't afraid to direct players. With Boswinga most likely leaving at the end of the season, his contract is up and Chelsea hasn't renewed, we got to see Chelsea's backline at the end of the game. If Ancelotti is smart he needs to move Terry to flip flop Terry and Luis.

As for Torres, he was awful. Let me add that drogba wasn't much better. The problem is that it's clear that Anelka can not play as playmaker atop the mid triangle Ancelotti likes to play. Ala JJ at Benfica. Anelka will sulk, but he needs to sit.

You hate on Cristiano, you don't even know that Di Maria is Argentine... You've come to the right place to learn a thing or two about Portuguese football and Portuguese footballers, but I wouldn't comment on the articles just yet, mate

Unfortunately some players must leave FCPorto to be recognized in our own country. Raúl Mereiles is another example.

Dalglish knows where to put him play and no surprise to me, he is revealing a great midfielder box-to-box, one of the better in the world in what talks about quick transitions.

I saw this game and I'm happy Liverpool won, if I was Torres I would never change Liverpool for Chelsea. I guess Torres will walk alone now...

I think Meireles is more effective when he is placed as AM,,you can see his fourth goal in five games..this is enough to prove he's capable of playing as AM...bento has food for thought now, because carlos martins is sucks not only as DM but also as AM...please bento, place him as AM instead of Martins, and then Veloso as DM...hope this is gonna blow your mind

I'm am the furthest thing from a Liverpool fan but I got a kick out of this game today. I loved the Liverpool fans singing "Should have stayed at a real club" lol. I think Torres will be the worst signing for Chelsea given the amount of money they spent on him.

Meireles has been the key reason why Liverpool are bouncing back as a real force. We have some amazing options in the midfield for our national team.

He has been in the form of his life recently. I knew that he was one of the best box to box midfielders in the world, but even I am surprised with how well he is doing. For the Seleccao he plays as the deepest holding midfielder, and at Liverpool he is the attacking midfielder. In both positions he is a class act. I can't think of many other players in the world who could also dominate like that.
