Liverpool’s Raul Meireles feeling more comfortable in England

Midfielder looking for further improvement

Portugal international Raul Meireles says his Liverpool team are starting to show signs of their potential, after a disappointing start to the season for the Merseyside club.

Liverpool won just one of their first eight Premier League games, leading to them spending much of the opening stages of the season in the lower reaches of the table. However, after an improvement in form, Meireles’ side are now up to 9th following a weekend victory over West Ham United at Anfield.

Meireles was among the players singled out for praise after the win over West Ham, and the former Porto man is currently showing good form in a central midfield role, having played part of the campaign in an unfamiliar position on the right side. The 27-year-old points to the side’s recent improvement as cause for optimism during the remainder of the season.

"I know the team did not start so well when I first signed but you have seen glimpses of what we can do during the recent four game winning run,” Meireles told the Liverpool Echo. “We lost a couple but we got it back against West Ham.

"The Premier League is difficult and it has been difficult playing in England because all the teams you come up against are good. This is more competitive but I am feeling more comfortable. When you are winning, things are always better and all the players are helping me.

“We will continue to work hard and I hope my performances can keep improving. I feel more comfortable playing in the middle but I will play wherever the manager wants me to. That's my job and I'm working to be a successful player for Liverpool and to help the team.”
