Eliseu makes Zaragoza switch

Loan deal for Portuguese

La Liga strugglers Real Zaragoza have completed the signing of Lazio winger Eliseu Pereira, with the Portugal international moving back to Spain for the remainder of the season.

The 26-year-old was presented at la Romareda this afternoon, having agreed terms on a loan deal which contains an option for Zaragoza to make the transfer permanent during the summer if Eliseu is successful in helping his new side escape relegation.

The move brings an end to what has been an unhappy spell in the Italian capital for the former Belenenses man. Eliseu signed for Lazio last summer on a five-year contract, having won plaudits for his performances for Spanish side Malaga last term, but the pacey forward made little impact in Rome, barely featuring in Lazio’s troubled league campaign so far.

As a result, Eliseu was regularly linked with a move back to Spain over recent months, with suggestions of interest from Real Betis as well as former club Malaga. However, it is Zaragoza, who are struggling in the relegation zone on their return to the top flight, that have won the race for the Azorean’s signature.

“When I heard of the interest from Zaragoza, I didn’t think twice. Zaragoza is a great club with a great history,” Eliseu said at his presentation, before conceding that he struggled with the switch to Italian football, which was “very different” to that played in La Liga.
