Juventus seek to rescind injury stricken defender’s contract

andrADEFurther doubts have been cast over the future of Portuguese international Jorge Andrade, after his club Juventus confirmed they hope to terminate the stricken defender’s contract amid fears that he may never play again.

Andrade has endured a horrendous two-and-a-half years with injury, including four operations on his left knee, which have seen him miss both the World Cup in Germany in 2006 and this past summer’s European Championships in Austria/Switzerland.

Upon signing for Juve last summer, where he has played just three matches, Andrade agreed a three-year deal which included a clause stipulating that the club would reserve the option to annul his contract if he was ruled out for a period exceeding six months.

Contract termination request

A club statement read: “The Juventus board announce that we have asked the league for the contract which expires in 2010 to be terminated. The player will undergo a medical in order for an expert report to be compiled within the next few weeks.”

Andrade’s injury hell began on 4 March 2006, while playing for Spanish outfit Deportivo La Coruna against Barcelona at Camp Nou. Having scored for his side, the defender then suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury, which saw him out for seven months and miss the World Cup.

A favourite of former Portugal manager Luiz Felipe Scolari, Andrade was called into the Portugal squad for their international with Kazakhstan in November 2006 shortly after returning to fitness. A solid second half of the 2006/07 campaign with Deportivo led to a summer move to Juventus, and Andrade’s problems appeared to be behind him.

Fractured knee-cap

However, on 23 September 2007, in just his third match in Italy, against Roma, the defender fractured a kneecap and ruptured tendons in the same knee, and was ruled out for most of the season. Any lingering hopes of recovering in time to participate in Euro 2008 were ended in March when, having complained of further pain in his knee, Andrade was operated on again.

Despite a nightmare 2007/08 season, Andrade had set his sights on making a full return for the start of the new campaign. Those aspirations would be short-lived, as while training alone in preparation for the start of Serie A, disaster struck again in July, with yet another severe injury to the same knee requiring a fourth operation, ruling him until next year.

Andrade’s injury timeline:

4 March 2006 - Dislocates and damages ligaments in left knee while playing for Deportivo against Barcelona at Camp Nou. Out for seven months and misses the World Cup.

23 September 2007 - Two months after signing for Juventus, suffers complete rupture of left knee against Roma. Ruled out for most of the season.

13 March 2008 - Reoccurring pain in left knee leads to another operation. Ruled out for remainder of the season and the European Championships.

10 July 2008 - Training alone in the Italian Alps ahead of the new season, suffers relapse of previous injury. Ruled out for several months.
