Siena president responds to Mourinho’s bonus jibe

Inter boss causing more controversy

Jose Mourinho is once again the centre of media attention in Italian football, after comments made suggesting that Siena could be given a financial incentive to beat his Inter side on the last day of the Serie A season.

After watching the Nerazurri beat Roma in the Coppa Italia final on Wednesday, Mourinho was asked about his team’s last two Serie A fixtures. Mourinho’s men host Chievo this weekend, before heading to Tuscany to play Siena for the last match in their bid to defend their Scudetto crown.

After discussing the Chievo match, Mourinho said: “Siena are a team that has a lot of quality with respect to their position in the table: if it's true that their President is happy to pay the same bonus to beat Inter as he would if they actually survived surely this will be an extra motivation for the players.

“And who knows if Roma, who have not paid the bonus for victory in the Coppa Italia today, are prepared to give some extra money to Siena.”

Roma have already announced that they are considering legal action for their reference in the interview, while Siena president Massimo Mezzaroma has also reacted to the quotes. “While thanking Mourinho for his kind words about our team, I feel that I have already clarified the situation with regards the safety bonus,” said Mezzaroma.

“I am furthermore convinced that in sport what counts more than money – an area where nobody can compete with Inter – is motivation, team spirit, pride and love for the club.

“Perhaps even the Inter coach, at the start of his career when he couldn’t boast such a huge budget, above all focused on those elements to build success.

“As for Mourinho’s allegations, I appreciate the sneaky joke. Considering the clever nature of the person who said it, this cannot be interpreted any other way.”
