Bittersweet first season for Tiago Gomes in Spain

Excellent individual form cannot save Hercules from relegation

Tiago GomesTiago Gomes’ debut season in La Liga ended in disappointment as his Herclues team were relegated. Even so, on an individual level the Portuguese midfielder admits he is pleased with his performances and is hopeful that he will remain in Spain’s top division.

“I don’t hide the fact I want to play for the club with different aspirations and I hope to continue in this league. But the season hasn’t finished yet, and although we’ve been relegated we want to finish off winning as a question of pride and respect for our club. It’s not the moment to be talking about the future, especially as I have another year’s contract at Hercules,” Gomes told Desportimedia.

“We showed quality during the championship and there are seven or eight teams that are at the same level as us, who were fighting not to go down. However, we were hurt by some injuries and we were not consistent. It was a shame we got relegated.

“I’m more experienced, mature and on an individual basis I had a positive year. We have to lift our heads and in the next game against Atletico Madrid we want to make a nuisance of ourselves. Afterwards, against Sporting Gijon we want to finish in the best way possible, with a victory.”
