Sergio Pinto to sign for Hannover

Portuguese midfielder Sergio Pinto is set to move from Alemannia Aachen to German Bundesliga rivals Hannover 96 this summer on a free transfer.

It was announced on Monday that the 26-year-old has agreed a three-year deal at the AWD-Arena starting from the 2007/08 season, after his current deal expires at the end of the campaign.

Pinto, who is the younger brother of former Portuguese international great Joao Pinto, arrived in Aachen during the summer of 2004 from Schalke 04, where he had played for five years.

The Portuguese-born player was on the books of FC Porto as a youngster, but has been based in Germany since 1995, when he joined little-known club TuS Haltern.

“I would like to make the next step in my development,” said Pinto of the switch.

“The people of Hanover simply convinced me and I have decided to change, despite an unforgettable time with Alemannia.”

The move would appear to represent a move up to a higher level in German football, with Pinto’s current side Aachen sitting in 15th place, only above the relegation zone on goal difference, while Hannover are currently 8th in the Bundesliga.

The two sides met on Saturday, with Pinto playing the full ninety minutes as Hannover ran out comfortable 4-1 winners. Pinto has started fifteen games this season and made three substitute appearances, although he has so far failed to score.

With the rest of the season still to play with his current club, Pinto will be looking to help Aachen achieve a positive result when they visit Borussia Monchengladbach on this weekend.
