Pinto helps Hannover see off Bayern

Hannover 96 3-1 Bayern Munich

Hannover strengthened their hold on third place in the German Bundesliga by beaten nearest challengers and defending champions Bayern Munich at the AWD-Arena on Saturday.

Surprise package Hannover went into the game with a 2-point advantage over Bayern in the race for a top-three finish and qualification for the Champions League. Having avoided relegation with a 15th-place finish last term, Mirko Slomka’s men have shocked many by maintaining their place in the upper reaches of the table heading into closing stages of the season.

Goals from Mohammed Adelaide (16’) and Konstantin Rausch (51’) put the hosts 2-0 up against Bayern, and Portugal-born midfielder Sergio Pinto got a crucial third just after the hour mark, minutes after Arjen Robben had given the Munich side hope by halving the deficit. Bayern ended the match with ten men following the dismissal of Breno, as Hannover took a major step towards making history and reaching the Champions League.

The match also saw former Benfica winger Carlitos among the unused substitutes. The Portuguese returned to the Hannover bench for last week’s 1-0 win at St Pauli, as he bids to return from a serious knee injury suffered on the opening day of the season. Carlitos signed for Hannover last summer from FC Basel, but went down injured less than a minute into his debut in August.
