Hannover’s Carlitos out until next year

Winger goes under knife

German club Hannover have confirmed that their Portuguese summer signing Carlitos has undergone a successful operation on the knee injury suffered on his Bundesliga debut at the weekend.

As first league appearances go, Carlitos could not have wished for a worse start in German football, with the former Benfica man rupturing his cruciate knee ligament after just thirty seconds of Saturday’s match with Frankfurt.

The 27-year-old was operated on earlier today and will now be out for around five months, meaning he will not play again this year. Carlitos will remain in Germany to perform his rehabilitation, with Hannover coach Mirko Slomka saying: “We will be able to follow his recuperation more successfully with him at the club.”

Carlitos signed a two-year deal at the AWD-Arena at the end of last month, having spent the previous three seasons in Switzerland with FC Basel.
