Basel's Carlitos makes Hannover switch

Winger heads to Germany

Bundesliga club Hannover have completed the signing of Portuguese forward Carlitos on a two-year contract from Switzerland's FC Basel.

The former Benfica winger was out of contract at St Jakob Park this summer, having played three seasons with Basel. Carlitos was linked with a string of clubs across the continent, including Roma of Italy, and was thought at one stage to be very close to joining Malaga ahead of Jesualdo Ferreira's arrival at the Spanish club.

However, the 27-year-old has opted for the AWD-Arena and Hannover, signing a deal for two years with The Reds. "I look forward to playing for Hannover and I believe I can help the team," he said.

Club director Jorg Schmadtke said of the deal: "We were watching him for some time. He can play with both feet, on both flanks and in the middle of the pitch. Carlitos will help us with his eye for goal and his versatility."

Hannover already have a Portuguese on their books, with Sergio Pinto, who has played in German football for fifteen years since leaving the Porto academy as a teenager.
