Greece: Santos’ PAOK close on second place

AEK to finish fourth ahead of play-offs

SantosFernando Santos’ PAOK Saloniki took a major step towards securing second place in the Greek Super League by winning 2-1 at Skoda Xanthi on Sunday.

Sergio Conceicao played the full ninety minutes for Santos’ side in their win over Xanthi, who were without Francisco Zuela. The victory, coupled with Panathinaikos’ failure to win their match at Panserriakos, means PAOK have a two-point advantage in second when they themselves host Panserriakos in next weekend’s final round of matches.

The four teams who finish between 2nd-5th place at the end of the season will enter into a play-off system to determine who will join champions Olympiakos in next season’s Champions League. The teams who finish second and third in the play-off group will qualify for the Uefa Cup, while the last-placed side will take part in the Intertoto Cup.

AEK are certain to finish in 4th place after losing 1-0 at home to Aris in the capital, with Geraldo Alves and Edinho both playing the full ninety minutes for AEK. Elsewhere, Daniel Kenedy was replaced after an hour as his Ergotelis side were held to a 0-0 draw by relegation strugglers OFI.

Lourenco played for just over an hour as Panionios ran out 4-1 winners at home against Thrasivoulos Fylis. Manuel Lopes watched from the bench as his Panthrakikos side were beaten 3-1 at home by Levadiakos, while Ricardo Esteves was also not called from the sidelines for Asteras Tripolis’ 2-1 defeat at Iraklis.
