Fiorentina splash out on Manuel da Costa PDF Print E-mail

Defender follows in footsteps of Rui Costa & Nuno Gomes

Manuel da CostaFiorentina, currently lying in fourth place in the Italian top flight, have bought young Portuguese centre-back Manuel da Costa from PSV Eindhoven.

The highly rated defender put pen to paper on a five-year deal and cost the Italian club 4.5m euros.

The 21-year-old has been on the radar of many of Europe’s top clubs in recent years, with Juventus, Milan and Chelsea all strongly linked with a move for da Costa last summer.

However, the Viola have won the race for his signature with sporting director Pantaleo Corvino confirming that a deal has been sealed with the Dutch champions for the versatile defender.

The player is expected in Florence later today to complete the move, which will bring an end to his 18-month stay in Eindhoven, which has seen da Costa win a Dutch title and compete in the Champions League.

Born in France, da Costa has already committed his future to the Portuguese national side and, having impressed in last summer’s European under-21 Championships, is regarded as a long-term part of the Seleccao das Quinas.

Manuel da Costa follows in the footsteps of Rui Costa and Nuno Gomes, who both had spells at the Artemio Franchi, with the former regarded as a club legend thanks to his seven-year stay with the side from 1994-2001.
