Basel’s Carlitos open to Roma move

Winger to consider future

FC Basel’s Portuguese forward Carlitos has responded to speculation linking him with a move to Serie A giants Roma by stating that he would be interested in a move to the Italian capital.

With his contract in Switzerland due to expire at the end of the season, the 27-year-old is weighing up his next move as he enters the prime years of his career, and weekend reports suggested that Roma are closely following his progress.

Speaking to Radio Renascenca, the ex-Benfica winger admitted that he was interested in the prospect of moving to Italy. “Roma are a great club and I would like to play in a team of that level and a championship such as the Italian league, which is better than the Swiss,” he said.

“So far, I have been focused only on playing for Basel, who have made me an offer to renew my contract. But I think there will be some tempting proposals and I will have to study them.”

Having failed to make the grade at Benfica, Carlitos has been in Switzerland for over three years. A highly successful season with FC Sion in 2006/07 earned him a move to Basel in the summer of 2007, where he has established himself as one of the country’s top attacking players.
