Carlitos delight at Swiss Cup win PDF Print E-mail

Third time lucky for former Benfica player

CarlitosFC Basel forward Carlitos has expressed his happiness at winning the Swiss Cup, following two previous cup final disappointments during his time in Portugal.

Currently enjoying his first season at St. Jakob-Park following a summer move from FC Sion, Carlitos and his team-mates saw off a spirited resistance from AC Bellinzona to run out 4-1 winners, although they were made to sweat when the lower league side drew level at 1-1 after an hour’s play.

“It was difficult because we couldn’t get the second goal and they equalised,” Carlitos said. “But after that we scored three times and finished them off. Now we are going to celebrate, but not too much because we still have to fight for the championship title.

“I lost two finals in Portugal. One with Benfica, to Vitoria Setubal, in the year that we were champions. The next season I lost another one but this time with Setubal, that time against Porto. Now I have finally won a cup.”

Carlitos’ impressive form this season has seen the 25-year-old linked with a move to Europe’s bigger leagues, with Italian side Lazio and French champions Lyon both thought to be following his progress.

“There are some offers but I’m not thinking of that because I have two more years left on my contract with Basel,” he said. “It is my agent who deals with that and tells me how things are. Now I just want to celebrate this cup."
