Basel lose Carlitos for remainder of season

Portuguese to miss title run-in

carlitosSwiss champions FC Basel’s title hopes have been dealt a blow with the news that Portuguese forward Carlitos will miss the rest of the season with a dislocated shoulder.

It is the second time the 26-year-old has suffered the injury, having damaged the left shoulder during his side’s 3-0 victory against Neuchatel Xamax at the weekend, and Carlitos is due to undergo an operation.

Carlitos has been a key player for Christian Gross’ side since moving to St Jakob Park from Sion in the summer of 2007, scoring three goals and contributing seven assists in 22 matches this season. Last campaign saw the former Benfica man net seven times in 32 league appearances.

The news is a major setback for Basel, who currently trail leaders FC Zurich by one point with six matches left to play in the Super League. The two sides meet in the capital next month, with Zurich hosting Carlitos’ men on 17th May.
