Carlitos influential as Basel win Swiss title

Young Boys 0-2 Basel

The final match of the Swiss Super League season saw the two teams battling for the championship face off on Sunday afternoon. FC Basel came out on top against Young Boys, with Portuguese winger Carlitos playing an important role in his second title success with the club.

The teams went into the match level on points, but Young Boys’ superior record in the head-to-head meetings meant that Basel had to win the match at the home of their rivals and go clear at the top of the table in order to win the title.

Basel went ahead just over five minutes before the break, with former Benfica man Carlitos setting up a goal for Valentin Stocker. The crucial second arrived on the hour mark when long-serving Australian midfielder Scott Chipperfield got his twelfth league goal of the campaign.

Basel last won the title in 2008, with Carlitos a key part of a double-winning side. That feat has been repeated this year, with the team having also won the Swiss Cup this term.
